How to Layer Light in a Retail Store
Ambient, accent and task light — plus a lux table by zone
Three Retail Lighting Layers at 200–500 Lux Ambient
A shop LED lighting solution works in three layers, not one grid. Ambient light sets the base level for aisles, accent light at 2 to 10 times the base pulls eyes to merchandise, and task light serves checkouts and fitting rooms (ConTech Supermarket Lighting Design Guide; BPA retail retrofit guidelines). Keep general sales floors at 200–500 lux, push apparel displays and fresh counters to 500–1000 lux, and hold contrast so signs read at least 3 times brighter than their background.

CRI90 Zoning for Fresh Counters With 20–25% High-R9 Fittings
Assign CRI by zone, not by building (Hyperlite CRI 80 vs 90 retail guide, 2025-12; IES light-level tables). Most chains now specify CRI90 only for fresh zones and feature walls — about 20–25% of fittings — and run efficient CRI80 elsewhere, because a well-aimed CRI80 grid with correct CCT beats a poorly aimed CRI90 grid. For open fresh counters choose a fresh food track light with meat and bakery spectra; inside closed refrigerated cabinets use linkable bar lights instead of track heads.
Retrofits rarely need rewiring: keep the existing 3-phase track and swap heads for LED, then add a wireless BLE dimming retrofit without rewiring for 1–100% flicker-free scenes and roughly 30% energy savings. Verify final lux against IES RP-2-20 and local energy code before ordering.
